Opening day trout derby is this weekend

The 16th annual Hooked On Fishing derby will run from 3 p.m. Friday, April 27 until noon Saturday.

The event kicks off at 3 p.m. Friday with tent camping in Lake Wilderness Park. The fishing derby and Rotary breakfast begins at 12:01 a.m.

New to the event this year is a Fishing Derby “Reel Raffle.” You can purchase a derby button and then you are entered to win a basket full of Chamber member prizes.

Rotary is also hosting “Big Fish Tales” Friday evening — beach story time and campfire songs with Tahoma High School’s Interact Club. Kids will receive a free book to take home.

This year’s tagged fish is named #HunterStrong — if you purchase a tagged fish ticket and catch the fish during the derby you will receive $300 cash prize. Tagged fish tickets can be purchased at Johnsons Home & Garden, BECU and the Wilderness Chevron.

Because the Beach House is currently under construction, the derby headquarters, weight station and food stand will be in a different location.

The Greater Maple Valley-Black Diamond Chamber of Commerce in partnership with Maple Valley Rotary and the city of Maple Valley are hosting this annual event.
