Puget Sound Fire units responded to a single-family residence in Covington just after 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 21, at the 18200 block of 262 Place. Dispatchers with Valley Communications received reports of smoke coming from the roof from neighbors and folks driving by. There was one resident home at the time of the fire but with the help of neighbors, he was alerted of the fire and made his way out on his own. There were no injuries due to the fire and no medical aid required. There were two other residents who lived at this house and all have received assistance from the Red Cross, according to a Puget Sound Fire press release.
When the first fire engine arrived large amounts of smoke was coming from the roof line of the house. Since there were multiple callers to 911, the call was upgraded and several more fire apparatuses were added. Puget Sound Fire engines stationed in Covington, Kent and Maple Valley responded to this fire. The initial engine was able to make sure no one was still inside the house as well as extinguish the fire.
“Thank you to King County Medic One, Covington Police Department and American Red Cross for your assistance on this call,” the press release stated.
This fire is currently under investigation and the cause has yet to be determined and no fire damage estimate is available.
There were working smoke detectors and CO detectors in the home. However, it was the neighbors who were able to ensure the occupants got out to safety.
“This goes to show how important it is to establish communication with your neighbors,” the press release stated.
