Incident Of The Week:
Sept. 29
- SHOCK: Buena Vista Drive. Medics responded to an aid call with a woman who was having difficulty breathing and her face was swelling from an allergic reaction to eating shrimp. It was reported that her face was swollen about four times the normal size and she was gasping for air. Responders were having a difficult time maintaining her airway and she was only getting 86% oxygen at room air. Because of this, the responders gave the woman a dose of epinephrine because she was in true anaphylactic shock. Shortly after receiving the shot she was able to breath, and the swelling started to go down.
Many people have allergies to various things but anaphylactic shock is a true emergency. Anaphylactic shock can restrict someone’s airway so it is difficult for them to breath. It is important to call 9-1-1 immediately if someone is experiencing the symptoms of anaphylactic shock. Some people are prescribed epinephrine injectors (epi pen) for this type of emergency but if it is used it is still important to call 9-1-1 and go to the hospital for further evaluation.
