The Maple Valley police officer hit by a car Tuesday is in a rehabilitation facility and will be for an extended period of time according to Police Chief Michelle Bennett.
The 22-year-old officer was responding to a kidnapping report from a 12-year-old boy, which turned out to be a hoax, when he was struck by the car.
Sgt. John Urquhart, spokesman for the King County Sheriff’s Office, reported the boy had received a poor grade in math and ran away from his home because his parents were “getting on him over grades.”
The boy concocted the kidnapping story after running away.
The officer was responding to the kidnapping report in the 18600 block of Maple Valley Highway when he was struck by a 2008 Ford Taurus driven by a 47-year-old Issaquah man.
The officer was taken to Harborview Medical Center.
He was released from the medical center that night, but he will spend a considerable period of time in the rehabilitation facility recovering from lacerations on his head and face and other injuries.
“He will make a full recovery,” Bennett said.
The chief said if anyone would like to bring flowers or a card to the officer, it can be taken to the Maple Valley Police Department, 22017 S.E. Wax Road.
The chief said the officer’s room is “kind of drab and he could use some things to cheer it up.”
