Pee-Wee soccer

• The City of Maple Valley Parks & Recreation is offering a pee-wee soccer league this fall for youth ages 3-5. Practices are weeknights beginning Aug. 31 and are determined by the coach.

Games are played on Saturdays at 10 or 11 a.m. and noon at Lake Wilderness Park.

The jamboree will be Sept. 12 and the season ends on Oct. 31. Teams are limited to 10 players and games are 6-on-6. Participants must have turned 3 years old before the jamboree and cannot turn 6 years old until after the season ends.

Player fees are $48 and includes a soccer ball and T-shirt. Registration begins July 6. Deadline to register will be Aug. 11. More information and forms are available at www.maplevalleyparks.com or call 425-413-8800 ext. 200.

• Sponsors

Each Pee-Wee soccer team hopes a local merchant or community group will sponsor their team. Sponsorships are $150 for the entire season of promotion. Sponsors receive a logo on each of the T-shirts, a sponsor plaque and great community exposure.

• Coaches

Our program depends on volunteer coaches. You do not have to play or know soccer or even have any coaching experience. All coaching details including drills, practice plans, advice and more will be provided at the coaches meeting. The coaching commitment to the youths will be approximately two hours per week and the coach chooses the practice days and times. The 2009 youth coed soccer coaches meeting will be 6 p.m. Aug. 19 at the Lake Wilderness Lodge.

Best defense for women

• Maple Valley Parks & Recreation’s is offering a three hour workshop just for women to learn how to easily protect themselves and their loved ones. This class is taught by black belt and professional instructor John Robinson. Open to women of all ages.

The “Best Defenses for Women” training program from Pacific Martial Arts Academy will show how to developing your mental, physical, and emotional responses to threat and aggression. Studies show that women who are willing to resist an attacker are twice as likely to escape injury as those who don’t. This workshop will focus on understanding and prevention, avoidance and de-escalation, and practical physical resistance.

Class is limited to 10 participants and the fee is $39 per person. This workshop is offered only one time this summer, 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at Lake Wilderness Lodge. Call 425-413-8800 ext. 200 to sign up.

Kickball

• The city of Maple Valley Parks & Recreation is offering a fall coed kickball league for adults ages 18 and over complete with officials, playoffs, and awards.

Games will be played Sundays between noon-6 p.m. at Patrick’s Field in Lake Wilderness Park. Adult kickball teams consist of 10 players, five males and five females. The fall season runs Sept. 13 through Nov. 8. Team fee is $375. Registration begins July 6. Deadline to register is Aug. 21. Flag Football

• Maple Valley Parks & Recreation’s adult flag football league is a noncontact, passing emphasized league. A team consists of six players per side and is played on a modified field. Two divisions of play will be offered: recreational and competitive. Games will be played on the beach house lawn in Lake Wilderness Park on Saturday mornings and afternoons. Team fee is $490.
