Maple Valley man leads police on chase from Covington to Tukwila | UPDATED

What started out as a routine traffic stop led to an on-again, off-again pursuit from Covington to Tukwila Tuesday afternoon and ended in the arrest of a 25-year-old Maple Valley man at Claim Jumper in Southcenter.

What started out as a routine traffic stop led to an on-again, off-again pursuit from Covington to Tukwila Tuesday afternoon and ended in the arrest of a 25-year-old Maple Valley man at Claim Jumper in Southcenter.

At 1:10 p.m., explained King County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Travis DeFries, a deputy tried to initiate a traffic stop of a blue GMC Jimmy SUV near the intersection of Southeast 258th Street and 180th Avenue Southeast in Covington.

The deputy had tried to maneuver behind the Jimmy for a traffic stop but was blocked by several other vehicles. The driver quickly turned the SUV into a residential neighborhood. The deputy followed the driver into the neighborhood and saw the SUV a few blocks down the street. Shortly thereafter, the SUV struck a tree 26000 block of 172nd Avenue Southeast.

DeFries said that car did not appear to be stolen, but its sales history was incomplete and it was unclear who owned it.

A male and a female were inside the vehicle, DeFries said, and “they had taken off on foot, so, we set up a perimeter and got our helicopter up overhead.”

About 20 minutes later, a motorcycle with a male and a female on it, took off from that same neighborhood. DeFries said deputies reasoned it was likely the two people that were almost pulled over earlier so “we decided to do a vehicle pursuit.”

The pair made their way north and east, flying past Tahoma High School at speeds estimated between 100 and 110 miles per hour, at which point due to unsafe road conditions the sheriff’s office chose to terminate the pursuit.

Somewhere along the way, the 27-year-old female who also has a Maple Valley address, jumped off the motorcycle, DeFries said, apparently on Petrovitsky Road.

“I don’t what their relationship is,” DeFries said of the man and the woman.

“Our Guardian One (helicopter) was still casually following him but there were no police on the ground,” DeFries said. “He was still driving like an animal. We picked him up again with Guardian One on the west side of the airport. Eventually he ran out of fuel.”

The suspect then began pushing the motorcycle to Claim Jumper, which is located at the corner of Southcenter Parkway and South 180th Street in Tukwila, then he ran into the restaurant.

A member of the media who was monitoring the suspect called the restaurant and informed the manager the man had run inside and that police were on their way to arrest the him. As the police arrived, “the manager comes out says, ‘The guy is in the bathroom,'” DeFries said.

Police arrested the man, who was driving with a suspended license and had a misdemeanor arrest warrant for domestic violence, fourth degree assault, out of Black Diamond. During the arrest, officers found the man in possession of a handgun and suspected narcotics, according to information provided by the Sheriff’s Office Wednesday morning.

Following the arrest, the male suspect was taken to the SeaTac Police Department to be interviewed, and the female was in police custody as well.

The man was booked into the Regional Justice Center for a number of felonies such as Investigation of Attempting to Elude, Violation of the Uniform Controlled Substance Act, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm and Possession of a Stolen Vehicle.

Charges were still under consideration for the woman.

Meanwhile, the motorcycle the suspect rode into Tukwila had no license plates and was traced through its vehicle identification number, which showed it had been reported stolen on Feb. 3 to the Kent Police Department.

“So, we’ve got stolen vehicles, pursuit and a gun,” DeFries said.
