The city of Maple Valley will be hosting their annual Independence Day picnic at Lake Wilderness Park.
According to a press release from the city, families with children will want to get to the park at around 4 p.m. to take part in free arts and crafts. There will also be live music, face painting and a pie baking contest. Pie entry applications must be submitted by July 2, the release said.
There will be food for purchase at the event. Proceeds from purchased food will go to the Maple Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra. Food includes burgers or hot dogs, with chips, candy, ice cream and a variety of sodas. Items will be sold between 4 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
The firework show will begin at 10 p.m. sharp, the release said. The show will take place in the beach area of the park. Music by the Maple Valley Youth Symphony will accompany the firework show, along with Maple Valley Jr. Voice winner, Lucia Flores-Winseman, who will be performing the National Anthem.
The release stated there is not as much room on the beach as there has been in past because of the Beach House construction that is taking place.
During the show itself, thee will be a “safety buffer” where the fireworks will be fired. The area will be patrolled by the Maple Valley Police Explorers and King County Sheriff’s office aquatic unit.
The intersection at Southeast 248th and Witte, as well as Southeast 248th and Lake Wilderness Drive will be restricted or closed during the exiting process from the park following the fireworks so two lanes of traffic can be used, said the release.
