Maple Valley holiday concert is Dec. 14

The Maple Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra will be hosting its holiday concert at Kentlake High School at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14.

The symphony will be joined by the Jam Club which is a music therapy based class for students with special needs.

The concert is open to the public and is donation only. Donations will be accepted at the door.

Black Diamond neighborhood plans Hometown holiday

Ten Trails in Black Diamond will be celebrating Black Diamond’s Hometown Christmas on Saturday, Dec. 8.

Festivities begin at 10 a.m. with the arrival of Santa and continue through the day with face painting, cookie decorating, wreath making, storytelling and other art projects.

At 4 p.m. activities move to Ten Trails where Mrs. Claus is set to greet visitors at the Village Green Park with holiday music and warm beverages before Santa arrives at 5:30 p.m. by fire truck to light the community Christmas tree.

Toys for Joy returns

The Puget Sound Regional Fire Authority, Kent Firefighters Local 1747 and the Kent Firefighters Foundation announced Nov. 28 the return of Toys for Joy as well as a new program to the fire authority — the Jerry Woods Holiday Engine, a longtime Maple Valley tradition, a media release stated.

Toys for Joy is an annual event where new, unwrapped toys are collected, sorted, wrapped and delivered to local food banks and other programs to be distributed to families in need.

Non-perishable food and monetary donations are also accepted.

Toys for children up to 12 years old can be donated at area fire stations.

Two gift wrapping parties are scheduled for Monday, Dec. 10 and Tuesday, Dec. 18 with both beginning at 6 p.m. at Fire Station No. 75, 15635 SE 272nd St. These events are open to the public and begin at 6 p.m.

The Jerry Woods Holiday Engine will visit neighborhoods in Maple Valley and Covington collecting foods and gifts for the Maple Valley Food Bank.

Legislative town hall in Auburn

The 47th Legislative District will be hosting a town hall from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13 at the Auburn Library.

The town hall is open to the public and will be the first in a series of meetings that will continue throughout 2019.

The following officials will be in attendance: State Senator-Elect Mona Das, State Rep. Pat Sullivan, State Rep.-Elect Debra Entenman, Kent Council member Dennis Higgins, Covington Council members Marlla Mhoon and Margaret Harto.

Childcare will be available and light refreshments will be served.

Ye Olde Lump of Coal returns

Each year, Palmer Coking Coal Company raises money for Vine Maple Place by providing gift wrapped lumps of coal.

If someone you know on your Christmas list has been naughty and deserves coal in their stocking, stop by Palmer Coking Coal at 31407 Highway 169 in Black Diamond and pick your free piece of coal.

The coal is free in hopes donations will be made toward Vine Maple Place.
