Brownie Troop 41468 of Maple Valley celebrated a significant achievement at its final meeting in June at Cedar River Middle School.
The troop had earned every Try-It patch offered to Brownies — all 57 of them — over a period of two years. Each girl proudly wore the Try-Its on their vests as symbols of hard work, fun and service.
Through earning the patches, the girls learned a number of important lessons ranging from financial responsibility, goal setting and salesmanship during Girl Scout cookie season, as well as honed skills in science, arts, crafts, writing, exercise, nutrition, courtesy and safety.
During the course of earning the Try-Its, the troop produced a cook book of favorite family recipes, went on a pair of overnight camp outs that offered them the chance to learn about nature, wildlife and astronomy, as well as swimming, dancing and playing games.
Other adventures included sleeping with the sharks at Point Defiance Zoo and going into the watershed to observe salmon at Landsburg Dam.
Community service was an important theme for the troop as it participated in food bank and toy drives, helped to remove invasive weeds at Cavanaugh Pond Natural Area on the Cedar River, built a gingerbread “Friendship Village” and presented it to seniors at Maple Valley’s Fountain Court and presented an exhibit about the water cycle at Rock Creek Science Fair, and asked the public to sign pledges to use water more wisely.
Troop leader Jill Saldivar said parent involvement was vital to the success of the girls.
“I so appreciate parents’ support, volunteering, donating, ideas and hard work,” Saldivar said.
The girls, many of whom started as Daisies in the troop when it began in 2008, look forward to more fun, friendship, and growth next year as Junior Girl Scouts.
