King County Sheriff’s deputies and Maple Valley police officers caught a man who robbed the Maple Valley branch of Bank of America this morning 10 minutes after he fled the scene.

The 44-year-old man, who wore a bandana on his face, walked into the branch, located at 23730 Witte Road S.E., at 9:10 a.m. and gave the teller a note demanding money, according to information provided by Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. John Urquhart.

The teller complied and the man left the bank.

“This is where his plan started to unravel,” Urquhart said in a statement. “Apparently the robber didn’t have his getaway planned very well, so he tried to carjack a car in the 23600 block of Wax Orchard Road. However, perhaps because he was unarmed, the carjacking was a no-go.”

Not long after a witness saw the man vaulting a six foot fence and running into a back yard in the 21600 block of Wax Road. He was then located by officers and arrested without incident, Urquhart said.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the man has a home address listed in Maple Valley, as well as an outstanding arrest warrant for Escape from Community Custody. He is also a convicted felon.

The money was recovered.
