Phillip Baldwin was arraigned in King County Superior Court today, Oct. 18, for the charges of second degree rape and attempted rape.
The 20-year-old Baldwin plead not guilty to both charges.
Baldwin has been charged with the rape of a Covington woman Sept. 30 and attempted rape of a woman Sept. 22 in Ballard.
The next court date for Baldwin is Oct. 28.
Bail was set at $750,000 when Baldwin was arrested at his residence in Maple Valley and charged with second degree rape Oct. 2 for the assault in Covington.
The King County Prosecutor’s Office filed the second charge of attempted rape Oct. 12 and asked the court to increase Baldwin’s bail to $1 million. He is being held in the King County jail.
Baldwin is also a suspect in the July 28 rape of a woman in Covington near LA Fitness.
The police report stated a 21-year-old woman was leaving work when she was dragged into a ravine by a man wearing a mask.
The man took her wallet and raped her.
The probable cause document describing the Sept. 30 Covington attack prepared by a King County detective stated Baldwin is alleged to have gained entry into the woman’s house at about 10 a.m. through a ruse. She did not know the man.
The 28-year-old woman had a newborn and toddler with her. She had the newborn in a carrier on her chest. Once inside, Baldwin is alleged to have grabbed her from behind and put his hand over her mouth. He threatened to hurt her children if she did not comply.
The prosecutor’s document stated Baldwin had “juvenile adjudications for indecent exposure.” There were three counts in January 2006.
Baldwin was convicted as an adult for domestic violence assault, fourth degree, in April 2009. He was also convicted for a harassment/domestic violence/protection order violation in September 2009.
In the Seattle Police Department probable cause document outlining the Sept. 22 attack in Ballard, the suspect is accused of grabbing a 26-year-old woman from behind and dragging her into a yard in the 1100 block of Northwest 57th Street in Ballard.
The document stated, “The suspect threatened to kill her if she screamed and demanded money.”
A homeowner came to investigate when the woman began to scream during the assault. The suspect fled the scene.
The police report noted Baldwin worked at a business about 10 blocks from the scene of the attack.
