One of the fastest juvenile fillies in track history heads the list of 3-year-old fillies nominated to the $50,000 Federal Way Handicap at Emerald Downs on Sunday, May 9.

Knight Raider, winner of four races and three stakes by a combined 34 lengths for trainer Doris Harwood and Fab Five Far m in 2009, is among 10 sophomore fillies nominated to the 6 ½-furlongs Federal Way, the first stop en route to the $75,000 Washington Oaks on Aug. 14.

A Washington-bred by Tribunal, Knight Raider set two stakes records and won at distances of 4 ½, 5 ½ and 6 furlongs, and carried her speed one mile while romping by 3-¾ lengths in the Barbara Shinpoch Stakes, the track’s signature event for 2-year-old fillies.

The only glitch was her fourth-place finish at 3-10 odds in the Sept. 13 Diane Kem Stakes, a stunning result that produced the three largest show prices in Washington state history. The payoffs ¬- $187, $108.60, $156.40 – came courtesy of a bridge-jumper who wagered $150,000 to show on Knight Raider in the 6 ½-furlong Kem on Washington Cup Day.

Have’n a Wild Time and Private Fortune, the one-two finishers in the Diane Kem, are nominated to the Federal Way Handicap by trainers Tom Wenzel and Jim Penney, respectively. Penney also nominated Include the Baby, a regally bred filly who scored by 4 ½ lengths in her career debut last month.

Feeling Fancy, a Kentucky-bred by Sky Mesa, has yet to be behind a horse in two races at Emerald Downs for trainer Frank Lucarelli and owner Chris Randall.
