Dogs and cats of all ages without microchips are invited to King County’s Kent Animal Shelter 1-3 p.m. Sunday to receive a deep discount on a high tech form of identification.
The microchip will always stay with them, even when their license tags may not.
The shelter is located at 21615 64th Ave. S. in Kent.
Sunday, veterinarians from Seattle King County Veterinary Medical Association in partnership with King County Animal Care and Control will protect your pet from loss with a microchip for $20. Payments will be accepted in cash and local check only.
“With winter upon us, the likelihood of storms and flooding is very high and pet owners should make sure they’re prepared now, in case their pet gets lost or their license tags come off,” said King County Animal Care and Control interim Manager Nancy McKenney. “Microchipping your animal is the best way to make sure that they are returned.”
Bring your dog on a leash and your cat in a carrier for this special one-time only event. Animals not on a leash or in a carrier will not be eligible to receive a microchip.
Microchips are small electronic devices about the size of a grain of rice that are implanted under the skin of a licensed pet. The device stores a number that is traced back to the owner’s contact information and if the animal is ever lost and recovered. Animal Care and Control Officers can pass a small handheld scanner over the chip, read the information, and contact the owner. Pet owners can change the name and contact information associated with that microchip over the life of the pet as they move or change phone numbers to ensure their contact information is always current.
Licensing is another way the county helps owners find lost pets. King County pet licenses are required for all dogs and cats in most areas of the county. Pet licenses can be purchased online, by mail or in-person at any King County Animal Shelter location.
