To become an Eagle Scout, senior scouts must complete a project that is structured where he can both demonstrate leadership within his community and benefit an organization other than the Boy Scouts of America. To achieve his goal, Wareham successfully managed a project that was completed for the Seattle Skeet and Trap Club. The club is a nonprofit shooting facility in Ravensdale that provides shotgun ranges for public use and promotes national and international amateur shotgun sports.

Wareham’s project involved planting trees in an area that will help to buffer sound at the club range.

Wareham secured 32 volunteers, ranging from teenagers to adults. He spent a great deal of time organizing the project by phone. He canvassed for volunteers by focusing on friends and immediate contacts. The volunteers provided the only tools necessary (shovels) for the activity.

Wareham acquired the Douglas fir seedlings for the project from Port Blakely – a local Washington, family owned foresting company. His funding for the seedlings was generously provided through a donation from this company.

Wareham commented that “there were no noteworthy obstacles” in undertaking the project. In October 2010, he made a presentation to the club board covering the scope and intentions of the activity. Wareham’s proposal was approved unanimously.

On project implementation day, 8:30 a.m., Dec. 18. Casey motivated his hungry team with the usual morning, workplace fare – doughnuts. He trained each team member on the correct method for planting fir seedlings and monitored the area to be planted. By 11 a.m. his volunteers successfully completed the planting of almost 600 tree seedlings.

Casey will complete the administrative portion of his Eagle Scout rank in February 2011. A ceremony will take place in March 2011 to award him for the achievement. Casey is 15 years old and a student at Kentwood High School.
