Kent School District approves directive to legislature to fund public education

The Kent School District Board of Directors approved Resolution No. 1467, a directive to the Washington state Legislature to fully fund public education at its meeting on June 10

The Kent School District Board of Directors approved Resolution No. 1467, a directive to the Washington state Legislature to fully fund public education at its meeting on June 10.

By approving the resolution, the board publicly showed its support for the unanimous decision by the Washington State Supreme Court of McCleary v. State, which declares the Washington state Legislature has not fulfilled its obligation to fully fund public education, but instead has relied on local levy dollars to pay certificated and classified employee salaries and “The Legislature has mandated numerous changes in standards, assessments, and teacher/principal evaluations, while eliminating critical funding for professional development to adequately implement these changes,” stated the Board in the resolution.

The resolution meets three of the six Kent School District board goals: high student achievement, highly effective staff and maximized resources.

The motion was carried unanimously.
