Hot and dry weather ahead

The Puget Sound region is expected to experience the warmest temperatures of the year in the next week, with highs reaching the mid-90’s, according to a press release by Puget Sound Regional Fire Authority.

It said, while warm weather does mean outdoor fun, the public needs to remember the potential dangers the hot weather brings.

Here are some tips from the Fire Authority to stay safe.

Health:

  • Stay hydrated, no caffeinated liquids
  • Wear Sunscreen – Especially children
  • Check on the elderly and those house-bound regularly
  • Close drapes and windows during the day to keep home cooler
  • Consider waiting until the evening to go out

Water:

  • Wear a coast guard approved and well-fitting life jacket
  • Swim at locations that have lifeguards
  • Supervise children at all times
  • Know that lake and river temperatures can be as low at 50 degrees
  • Remember water activities and alcohol do not mix

Fire:

  • Know the Phase 1 burn ban in this area
  • Check with local fire departments before starting any outdoor fires
  • Never discard cigarettes or other burning materials on the ground
  • Keep landscaping near your home well-watered and away from the building
  • Dispose of BBQ ashes in a tightly sealed metal container, not a paper sack.

The press release said “Your firefighters want you and your family to have an enjoyable and safe summer, Game of Thrones may say ‘winter is coming,’ but not in the Puget Sound Region.”
