Home Depot’s announcement that it will cut 7,000 jobs will not affect the Covington location, company officials said, as the chain of home-improvement stores isn’t cutting jobs in what are known as “orange box” locations.
The company for do-it-yourselfers announced Monday that it would be streamlining its organization by closing down other aspects of the business, its 34 EXPO Design Center stores, as well as other concept locations.
Home Depot doesn’t have any of these stores in Washington, with the majority of the EXPO locations in California, as well as stores in Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia. This portion of the company wasn’t doing well financially, according to Home Depot representatives, and it wasn’t anticipated to improve soon enough. Continuing this business would divert focus and resources from the company’s core “orange box” stores, officials said.
Stores that are targeted for closure will be closing during the next two months.
Covington’s Home Depot opened last June with nearly 150 employees.
