Historic fire truck brings news of Miners Day event

A 1947 Ford Howard Cooper underwent complete restoration over a period of about three years; it is the original fire truck for the city of Black Diamond.

The fire engine is now used for historic purposes in parades and at community events. It was recently decorated to promote the Black Diamond Miners Day, which will be held on Saturday, July 13 along Railroad Avenue.

Miners Day theme 2019 is “Women’s Suffrage Centennial,” a tribute to the 100 years since women were assured their right to vote through the 19th Amendment. A comedy skit with a women’s suffrage theme will be shown at 12 p.m. A 1920’s vintage fashion show is focused on clothing as worn by women 100 years ago.

Miners Day also features live music, vendors and booths, face painting, a donut-eating contest, an artists’ chalk-in contest, kids’ crafts, museum tours from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and a 5K race/walk. The nearly three-mile race begins on Lawson Street at 9 a.m. Registration information for the 5K is available online at www.blackdiamondminersday.com or on the day of the race at 7:30 a.m. at Black Diamond Gym.
