Kent Covenant Church, whose roots extend to Maple Valley, has expanded and renovated its facilities.

The church, located at Southeast 240th and 120 Avenue Southeast, celebrated the completion of its $4.2 million project June 21 with a dedication worship service and open house.

The new facilities include an expanded foyer, espresso bar and Fireside Room, preschool and nursery classrooms, and a new office wing.

Church officials said the Covenant Kids mid-week preschool has moved into its new space and offers weekday classes for 3-year-olds to pre-kindergarten during the school year. Openings are available for this fall.

The Fireside Room already is in frequent use for small receptions and gatherings, as well as a coffee house with live music every other Saturday night, according to church officials. Espresso service is offered every Sunday morning, and plans call for expanding the coffee shops hours in the fall.

Part of Evangelical Covenant Church, a national congregation founded in 1885, Kent Covenant was created in 1967. It used the band room of a junior high school as its first meeting place.

From that humble beginning, the influence of the church has grown, including the launching in 2001 of CedarCreek Covenant Church in Maple Valley.
