The Covington City Council voted unanimously to approve a construction contract for Phase 1 of Covington Community Park at their June 12, 2012 meeting.
The groundbreaking event will be held at the site at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 26.
In 2003, the city acquired 30 acres of property at the southwest corner of SE 240th Street and 180th Avenue SE.
The master plan for the park was adopted in February 2009. The project has faced hurdles over the past few years.
As the economy has fluctuated, grant funding has been harder to come by and city budgets were cut.
Today, Phase 1 construction is fully funded thanks to a combination of private donations and grants that supplement the parks capital improvement budget.
The Kent Youth Soccer Association contributed funds to the project and the city received grants from the State and King County.
Approximately 63 percent of the project will be paid for by grants and donations.
Phase 1 of the park includes construction of the city’s first full size grass soccer field, nearly a mile of new trails, a location for community events, parking and 15 acres of wooded open space.
Eventually, the park will also have sports courts; softball, baseball and soccer fields; a playground; a Teen Zone; and picnic shelters. The public is invited to the groundbreaking event.
