Maple Valley Councilman Glenn Smith has decided to run for re-election.
Smith said he has been reflecting on the progress the city has made during his first term on the council and why he wants to run.
“It’s been said there are two types of politicians, those who run for office because they want to do something and those who run because they want to be someone,” Smith said. “We’ll have examples of each on the next ballot.”
Victoria Laise Jonas and David Pilgrim are also up for re-election. Jonas will be challenged by Stanette Marie Rose while Pilgrim does not yet have an opponent.
There are a number of challenges facing the city, Smith explained, and he feels prepared to address them if he is re-elected.
“Maple Valley is maturing as a community,” he said. “It requires a similar maturity on the part of city government.”
Smith said the council will need to deal with a budget that overestimates its housing permit projections as well as the issues that will come with the planning process for Summit Place, also known as the donut hole.
For those reasons and others, Smith said, he has decided to seek a second term on the council. He does not yet have an opponent.
