Fire District 37 seeking potential commissioners

Fire District 37 is accepting applications for a pending opening on its Board of Commissioners, according to department spokesman Kyle Ohashi.

Ohashi said officials are collecting names of people who would want to serve as a commissioner for the district, which serves Covington and surrounding unincorporated areas, in preparation for an anticipated opening in the near future.

“At this time, we don’t have an official opening,” but Commissioner Bill Stewart announced “at the last commissioner meeting that he may be leaving his position in the spring time if he moves out of the district,” Ohashi said.

Stewart hasn’t formally resigned, Ohashi said, but the advance informal warning caused district officials to start reaching out to potential candidates.

“As a precaution, they want to compile a list of people would be interested in completing his term of office,” Ohashi said. “There is no time line of when he’s leaving office, but they are gathering names.”

The commissioners meet the third Monday of each month.
