A total of 11 students graduated from the Kent Phoenix Academy, with six on hand for the winter graduation ceremony Jan. 29 in the school’s library. The graduates received their high school diplomas surrounded by family, friends and representatives from across the district.

Principal Merrilee Lyle told the six students who participated in the event, “You have earned your diploma and nobody can take that away from you,” she said. “We are all so proud of you.”

Deshawn Jackson-Bentley lead the Pledge of Allegiance and Cierra Willaford’s graduation speech focused on life lessons learned and wishes for the future through quotes from Dr. Seuss.

In addition receiving her high school diploma, Itzel Rivera was wearing the KSD Seal of Biliteracy. Gov. Jay Inslee signed the State Seal of Biliteracy bill into law last year. The Seal of Biliteracy, Bill 6424, recognizes students who have attained proficiency in both English and one or more other world language by high school graduation.

Itzel plans to pursue a career in the medical field and will begin taking classes at Green River Community College in March.

Interim Superintendent Dr. Tony Apostle told the students to push themselves as they work charting their path in life.

Kent Phoenix Academy offers four unique high school programs to students in the Kent School District. Each program has a different approach and focus for students who want a learning environment different from a traditional high school.
