Drivers who cross Lake Washington, connect to Interstate 5 from West Seattle or head south from the University District this weekend should plan ahead now. With several critical highway improvement projects shifting into high gear, the roads will be busy for the first weekend of spring. Drivers should add extra to time their trips and use an alternate route if necessary.
West Seattle Bridge to I-5
- Crews will close the ramps from the West Seattle Bridge to northbound I-5 and Columbian Way from 10 p.m. Friday, March 22 until 5 a.m. Monday, March 25. The ramp from Sixth Avenue South to northbound I-5 and S. Columbian Way also will be closed for expansion joint replacement and bridge support repair.
I-5 Seattle
- Crews will close up to three lanes of southbound I-5 from Northeast Ravenna Boulevard to Boylston Avenue North Friday, March 22 and Saturday, March 23 from 10 p.m., until 10 a.m. nightly for pavement grinding. The Ravenna on-ramp to southbound I-5 will also be closed at that time. The I-5 express lanes will be open to southbound traffic nightly from 9:45 p.m., until 1:30 p.m.
I-90 express lanes
- The Interstate 90 express lanes will be closed around the clock from 11 p.m. Friday, March 22 until 11 a.m., Sunday March 24. During the closure, Sound Transit will survey and drill for soil samples as part of the East Link Extension light rail project. The Seattle portion of the I-90 express lanes will reopen by 6 a.m. Sunday – eastbound to Mercer Island only – in time for the Mercer Island Half Marathon.
