Two Kent School District elementary schools received a School of Distinction award “for sustained improvement in English language arts and math over a five-year period,” according to a press release from the district.
The two schools were Crestwood Elementary in Covington and Horizon Elementary in Kent.
“Crestwood is excited and honored to receive the 2016 School of Distinction award,” Crestwood Principal Ryan Preis said in the release. “Our school community is proud of the dedication, hard work, and professionalism of the school staff and thankful for the difference they are making in student learning over the years. Our school community is also proud of Crestwood’s students who have responded to great instruction and worked with determination to achieve sustained growth.”
The release stated, Crestwood had previously won the honor in 2007.
“I could not be more proud of the exceptional students, staff, and families that comprise the Horizon Elementary community,” Horizon Principal Miles Erdly said. “We are extremely honored to receive the 2016 School of Distinction award. Our beliefs, commitment, and dedication to the success of every learner guarantees that we promote equity and excellence and develop a positive school climate that empowers our students to realize their potentials.”
Now in its 10th year, the School of Distinction (SOD) awards were created in the summer of 2007 to recognize the highest improving schools in Washington State.
A celebration for 11 school districts is being held on October 27, at the Puget Sound Educational Service District (PSESD).
