Call for school supplies
The Black Diamond Community Center is collecting school supplies for children of low-income families in the Enumclaw School District. Donated items must be turned in by Aug. 21.
Those in need can pick up an application between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday, at the Black Diamond Community Center, 31605 Third Ave.
Supplies needed: No. 2 pencil packs, pencil sharpeners, pencil-top erasers, big pink erasers, pencil boxes, zippered pencil pouches to go in three-ring binders, colored pencils, colored washable markers, ball-point pens (black, blue and red), black Sharpies (regular tip), highlighters (yellow, pink, blue), Fiskar scissors (both child-size and regular size), white glue sticks, glue bottles, 12-inch rulers with inches and metric marks, three-ring binders of different ring-sizes, notebook divider sets, two-pocket folders, three-prong folders with pockets, composition books (both wide and college ruled), spiral notebooks (wide ruled), loose-leaf filler paper (college ruled), 3×5 index cards, and scientific calculators.

Water district awarded grant
The Covington Water District was awarded a grant from the Washington state Department of Commerce to install an energy-generating turbine, according to a media release.
The new turbine will be part of the new water connection from the regional water main, the release added.
McKinstry, a design-build firm, has partnered with the water district to design and install the turbine.
The release stated the turbine will be installed near the water district’s administrative building.
This project is currently in the final design stage and construction is estimated to begin this fall and wrap up in spring 2018.
Free summer meals for kids, teens
The United Way of King County is bringing summer meals to a number of locations throughout the county now until the end of August.
Meals are free and open to all 18 years or younger. No enrollment or pre-registration is needed.
The YWCA Passage Point Housing in Maple Valley is offering lunch from 1 to 2 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and a snack from 3:30 to 4 p.m.
The KYFS Birch Creek in Kent is offering lunch from 1 to 2 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and a snack from 4 to 5 p.m.

Repair Cafe coming to Maple Valley The King County EcoConsumer outreach program is bringing a repair cafe from 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29 at the Greater Maple Valley Community Center.
This event allows people to bring in small household items and clothing to be repaired for free.
Experienced fixers and sewers will be on site to fix items as well as help you learn how to repair items yourself.
It is recommended that you bring in items small enough to be carried by one person. And any clothing items to be fixed must be washed first.
