Covington receives achievement award

The city of Covington was given the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting award by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada.

According to a media release, this award is the highest form of recognition in the area of government accounting and financial reporting.

While the city as a whole received this certificate, the city’s finance department will also receive an Award of Financial Reporting Achievement for their contributions to the reporting process, the release added.

Performance to blow off post-holiday blues

Jim Hanna will be performing from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19 at Ristrettos in Maple Valley.

Nominate those who help reduce waste

From now until March 1 King County is looking for nominations for its Earth Heroes at School awards program.

This program helps recognize students, teachers, staff, school volunteers, programs and even entire schools who have done their part in protecting the environment and teaching others how to.

Winners will be honored at an event in the spring.

Nomination forms can be found online at: kingcounty.gov/earth-heroes.

Nominations can be made in any of the following categories:

• Waste reduction, reuse, or recycling;

• Food waste prevention or food waste collection for composting;

• Household hazardous waste prevention or management;

• Sustainable gardening, landscaping, or building; and

• Climate change education or greenhouse gas emissions reduction.
