Families will have plenty of fun things to do this weekend at Covington Days and Covington Arts Commissioner Betty Nomura is particularly excited about arts activities for youngsters.

Nomura said the Street Art Chalk Walk will move to the Kid Zone, which has been coordinated by the Coalition of Covington Churches, after being behind Walmart the past two years. Art Chalk Walk is sponsored by the city of Covington.

“They’ll have games and tiles for the kids to decorate,” Nomura said. “It’s highly visible, the fire engine is right next to it, people are going to be able to see it when they walk into the area.”

The Chalk Walk will run from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday in the Kid Zone which can be found off Wax Road near MultiCare.

Nomura also developed another activity for kids on Sunday because she “saw a gap there and when I see a gap I like to plug it.”

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday parents can bring their youngster to the Kid Zone to check out the Artsploration Plus activity stations.

“Drop by to explore a variety of fun and creative activities,” Nomura said. “We’re going to have two painting activities, modeling clay, a puppet station, a music station and a bubbles station.”

Nomura hopes that the activities will draw youngsters in.

“My idea is that the children will lead the way,” she said. “We have the stations set up and they will go and choose what looks good to them. I love it when people pull stuff together for free, for fun and for families.”

Free is particularly key to Nomura during Covington Days.

“With the economy and everything the way it is, the opportunities we can provide for our families is important, and it’s always important for the community to come together like this,” she said. “And hopefully they can take advantage of all the free, wonderful stuff we have going on during the festival. There really is an awful lot going on and I’m just really excited about it this year. It’s just growing and growing.”

Nomura is looking for more volunteers and anyone who wants to help can call her at 253-631-1616.
