The Covington City Council honored Jason Morrison as the Citizen of the Year and Karen Brown as the Honorary Citizen of the Year on July 11.
Morrison was recognized for his commitment to the community as a volunteer coach for Covington youth sports. According to Karla Slate, communications manager for Covington, he coached multiple youth sports for many years including basketball, soccer and flag football.
“Jason has been a volunteer coach in the city of Covington long before the city took it over,” said Sean Conway, the athletics specialist for the Covington. “He is always willing to do whatever it takes for our program to thrive. Jason is everything I want as a volunteer coach, he is dedicated and continuously goes above and beyond for his teams.”
Brown is being recognized for her dedication to Covington’s youth as Covington Co-op Preschool teacher for more than 20 years.
“Mrs. Brown gives so much of herself so willingly to the children and families of Covington Co-op Preschool,” said Lindsey Bissell a coworker of Brown’s. “She is loved by so many.
Each year, the city of Covington recognizes two outstanding individuals as the Citizen of the Year and Honorary Citizen of the Year.
Over the past several years, the previous honored citizens have been volunteers, advocates, ambassadors, dedicated residents to the city, said Slate.
The City Council received nominations from the public, May 23 to June 14, and then considered these nominations at their June 28 City Council meeting. This year, the council members unanimously selected Morrison and Brown.
Morrison and Brown were officially honored at the July 11 City Council meeting with a proclamation from the city and a reception in their honor.
They were also honored at the Covington Days festival on Saturday with a ride in the parade and presentation of their plaques at the main stage.
