City council selects citizen award winners
Each year, the city of Covington honors two residents as Citizen of the Year and Honorary Citizen of the Year.
This year Jason Morrison is Covington’s Citizen of the Year and Honorary Citizen goes to Karen Brown.
The public was asked to nominate residents and at the June 28 city council meeting, the council unanimously selected Morrison and Brown.
Morrison is “recognized for his commitment to the community as a volunteer coach for Covington youth sports,” a media release stated.
Brown is “recognized for her dedication to Covington’s youth as a Covington Co-op Preschool teacher for more than 20 years,” the release stated.
Morrison and Brown were officially honored at the July 11 council meeting. They will also be honored at the Covington Days Festival on Saturday, July 15.
Residents urged to provide comments on equipment upgrades
The community is invited to provide the Maple Valley Parks and Recreation Commission with comments to help guide decisions regarding replacing playground equipment at Lake Wilderness Park.
An open house at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 26 at Lake Wilderness Lodge will provide an opportunity for the public to voice their comments to commission members.

Food bank time change due to parade
The Storehouse Food Bank, 26210 180th Ave SE, in Covington will change the time clients can pick up their food boxes on Sunday, July 16.
Due to the Covington Days Parade, clients can pick up their food from 8:30 to 9 a.m. The road will close beginning at 9:30 a.m.

20 Keys to the City awarded for birthday celebration
If you know someone living in the greater Maple Valley area who has contributed to the community through volunteering, public service or other efforts, the city is asking you to share your nomination.

The council will recognize 20 individuals with a Key to the City at the Town Hall and Ice Cream Social on Aug. 28.
Meet the finalists for fire chief
The public is invited to meet the finalists for Puget Sound Regional Fire Authority fire chief at a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 24 at the Kent Senior Center, 600 E. Smith Street.
In late June, 14 to 16 candidates were considered until a stakeholders group narrowed the choices down to three finalists, a media release stated.
The three finalists are Steven Heitman, Jeff Helm and Matthew Morris.
Tahoma senior qualified for junior championship
Colt Sherrell, a senior from Tahoma, qualified to compete at the 70th USGA Junior Championships in Wichita, Kansas from July 17-22.
He qualified by shooting a 73 at the Classic Golf Club in Spanaway. He took second out of 104 of Washington’s best junior golfers.
The championship will include 156 junior golfers from around the world.
Birthday Dreams celebrated birthday number 5,000
On June 21, six birthdays were celebrated with cupcakes, ice cream, face painting, goodie bags for guests and gifts for the children.
The Renton nonprofit, Birthday Dreams celebrated its 5,000 birthday at YWCA Passage Point in Maple Valley last month. Along with its milestone, Birthday Dreams also celebrated five other children with June birthdays.
YWCA Passage Point is a family shelter that supports 46 homeless families and provides housing support while teaching life skills, a media release stated.
