King County is offering two opportunities for the public to learn about the Cedar Hills Regional Landfill in Maple Valley.

On Saturday, Oct. 19, the public is invited to take a free, guided tour of the landfill. The following week on Oct. 24, the King County Solid Waste Division will host its regular community meeting for interested citizens. The landfill tour is designed for adults, tours for school-aged children and school groups can be arranged by calling 206-296-4490.

The tour begins at 9 a.m. and lasts about 90 minutes. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 206-296-4490, TTY Relay: 711. Parking is provided at the landfill, 16645 228th Ave Southeast in Maple Valley, and participants will board a Metro bus for the guided tour. The bus is wheelchair accessible.

To ensure safety, tour participants must wear closed toe footwear and adhere to all traffic signs at the landfill.

The landfill community meeting is set for Oct. 24 from 7-9 p.m. at the King County Library Service Center in Issaquah, at 960 Newport Way Northwest.

This meeting is part of the division’s ongoing commitment to meet with landfill neighbors on a regular basis to discuss conditions and activities at the landfill.

Representatives from Bio Energy Washington, the company that owns and operates the landfill gas-to-energy plant, will also provide an update on that facility.
