Cedar Grove Organic Compost will award a $2,500 scholarship to a graduating senior at Tahoma High School for the third year.
The “Seeds for Scholars” scholarship program, launched in 2013, recognizes a Tahoma High School student based on demonstrated interest, action and achievement in issues surrounding sustainability and the environment. This can include, but is not limited to, Green Team membership, completion of a community service project involving building a garden, or supporting school’s recycling and composting efforts.
“The Tahoma School District and its leadership have chosen to lead the way on issues of sustainability, setting the bar very high for what can be accomplished and sustained in a school setting,” said Karen Dawson, director of community relations, in a press release. “Our company has deep roots in Maple Valley and, these students, in addition to being our neighbors, represent the future of sustainability in this region.”
To earn the scholarship, a student must demonstrate that he or she will graduate with a 3.0 or higher grade point average. The student must have demonstrated leadership qualities throughout their high school career including such traits as being respectful of teachers, helping other students, good sportsmanship, and compassion.
The student must be attending post high school education. Students planning to attend four year universities, community colleges and vocational/technical colleges are all considered.
The scholarship includes:
• $2,500 payment made directly to the college of choice in 2015
• The opportunity to be interviewed for a summer internship at Cedar Grove in the summer of 2015 and every summer thereafter while the student is in college
