Backpacks for Kids: Through Aug. 22. Black Diamond Community Center is collecting donations of school supplies and clothing for low-income children, grades K-12. Items needed include: three-ring binders, loose-leaf paper, spiral notebooks, pencils, pens, markers, rulers, crayons, paints, backpacks, glue sticks, tissues and gallon-sized Ziploc bags. Troop donations: 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Aug. 23. Individuals can donate food and personal care items for troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Black Diamond Ride to Cure Diabetes: 7 a.m.-noon Aug. 30. Participants can choose 14-, 25-, 65- or 100-mile bike rides. Fourteen-mile family ride open to ages 8 and older.
