Members of the public can get rid of unwanted prescription drugs, with no questions asked, on April 26.

The Black Diamond Police Department and Drug Enforcement Administration will be disposing of the public’s unwanted prescription drugs from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Black Diamond Police Department.

This is the eighth such opportunity in Black Diamond in three years. Authorities hope to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs.

Liquids, needles and sharps cannot be accepted; only pills or patches.

The service is free and anonymous.

Last October, Americans turned in 324 tons of prescription drugs at more than 4,114 sites operated by the DEA and its thousands of state and local law enforcement partners. A total of more than 3.4 million pounds of pills have been collected in the seven events.

Authorities say medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. This lead to accidental poisonings and overdose.

Disposing of unused medicines by flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash can pose potential safety and health hazards.
