KSD employees of year named
The Kent School District announced June 12, 11 employees of the year for the 2017-2018 school year.
Among those honored was Michael Angelidis, a math teacher at Kentlake High School, Debbie Matthes, the Kentwood kitchen manager and Marie Wienker, office manager at Kentlake.
The other eight employees of the year are:
• Mike Christiansen, head volleyball coach at Kent-Meridian
• Joan Johnson, East Hill paraeducator
• Rochelle “Shelley” Kitts, central office administration support
• Julie Lahde, finance department supervisor
• Laura Mroos, mentor teacher
• Charleen Prichard, Mill Creek assistant principal
• Konrad Shaw, HVAC technician
• Kim Thompson, bus driver
Bike challenge and rodeo Saturday
The annual bike challenge and safety rodeo is Saturday, June 23 at Lake Wilderness Park.
Registration and practice for the 1/2 mile course begins at 9 a.m. and the race begins at 10 a.m.
The bike safety rodeo runs from 9 a.m. until noon in conjunction with the bike challenge.

Summer meals for kids available
The Kent School District announced it is offering free summer meals to children and teens 18 years and younger during June, July and August.
The meals program is in partnership with the Kent School District Nutrition Services, Washington State Superintendent of Public Instruction and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Police patrol for impaired boaters
The Black Diamond Police Department will be participating in the national campaign — Operation Dry Water.
Law enforcement will be focused on educating boaters about safe boating practices, which includes boating sober and enforcing the state’s boating under the influence laws, a media release stated.
Operation Dry Water weekend will take place June 29 to July 1, the release stated.

Rural Forest Commission seats open
A 13 member volunteer group is looking for three new members.
Applicants should represent the following:
• Rural cities in King County — including Black Diamond, Carnation, Duvall, Enumclaw, North Bend, Skykomish, Snoqualmie
• Residential forest landowners with greater than 20 acres of rural forest land enrolled in the Forest Land Designation program
• Professional or academic forests or forestry associations
Also welcome are applicants who own less than 20 acres, forest landowners with greater than 40 acres rural forest land and affected tribes.
Members are asked to volunteer for a minimum of three years. Bi-monthly meetings are held from 8:30-11:30 a.m. on the third Thursday of each month.
