Animal shelter doubling in size

The King County animal shelter in Kent that serves Covington, Maple Valley and other areas is making more room for homeless cats and veterinary students.

Crews recently installed two large portable buildings alongside the current shelter. The additions will double the space for cats, including room for them to play and be seen by potential new owners, officials said.

Cats could move in before a grand-opening celebration in December, said Wendy Keller, the shelter’s acting director.

“This new space lets us provide a more comfortable space for the cats, which means they will be healthier and happier,” Keller said.

The second portable will house PIMA Medical Institute’s veterinary technical program. Students will assist shelter workers on medical rounds and receive hands-on experience with animal care.

It’s the first time PIMA, which is paying for its building, has formed a partnership with a county agency to provide an on-site classroom, officials said. The county for the past year has faced criticism of shelter conditions by citizens, elected officials and consultants. The shelter’s lack of space for cats has been one of the concerns.
