Animal Angels Cat and Dog Food Bank feeds pets in need

Most companion pets, along with furry bodies and wet noses, have full bellies, but many families cannot provide the right food for their pets leaving them in danger of starvation. This is where Kent-based Animal Angels Cat and Dog Food Bank steps in to give them a little break.

Most companion pets, along with furry bodies and wet noses, have full bellies, but many families cannot provide the right food for their pets leaving them in danger of starvation.

This is where Kent-based Animal Angels Cat and Dog Food Bank steps in to give them a little break.

“The food bank delivers free cat and dog food to pet owners who are having trouble making ends meet,” co-founder Audrey Torrey said. “The fact that we deliver is our one big difference (from other food banks).”

Audrey Torrey and her husband, Mark, got the idea while on vacation to visit their daughter in Nampa, Idaho. She told them about the local dog park and food banks for pets around the area. The couple began the legal paperwork in November 2009 and in June 2010 they received their federal 501(c)3 tax exempt status as a non-profit organization.

“It was pretty expensive to file all the necessary papers,” Audrey Torrey said. “But we decided it was worth the sacrifice because we both love animals.”

As of right now, the Torreys are the only two volunteers that work at the food bank.

Mark Torrey understands and runs the business side of the operation while Audrey handles all the driving.

Being a retired couple, the Torreys try to work with people and meet their schedule.

“Together we decide what to take to a client and we are always together when delivering” Audrey Torrey said. “Oh, and there are no big requirements when qualifying. If you need help and ask we will help if we possibly can.”

Animal Angels Cat and Dog Food Bank is looking for dry or canned cat and dog food, kitty litter and financial help.

So far the food bank has received food donations from Petco, some veterinarians in King County, Walmart and some personal checks.

“It would be great if some vets could give our clients a break on services,” Audrey Torrey said. “We are located in Kent and we accept checks or food. We will pick up food or litter donations.”

It doesn’t take too much to make a difference in someone’s life even if that someone happens to be a furry friend.

“We are just one retired couple, trying to make a difference,” Audrey Torrey said.

There are many ways to help out.
