Purple Light Nights was held Sept. 29 in Covington. Purple Light Nights is a night to increase the awareness of domestic violence and its effects on children and families, according to the Purple Light Nights website. At the event, there was a 5K walk for people to participate in followed by a barbecue. Everyone was dressed in purple and wore purple lights. In 2004 Victoria Throm, creator of Purple Light Nights, founded a nonprofit called Covington Domestic Violence Task Force. Later, in 2006 she proposed the idea of Purple Light Nights to the task force. Not long after in 2007, Purple Light Nights became a reality and has been a long-lived Covington event ever since.
Wearing purple to raise awareness
Every year the city of Covington is lit in purple lights for the month of October to raise awareness about domestic violence.
