My husband, who is a fan of history, reminded me of the old Chinese curse (yes, curse): “May you live in interesting times.” Indeed, these times are nothing if not interesting. Funny word, “interesting,” with a long tradition of being the substitution of choice when the user actually means “lame,” “horrible” or “wretched.”
A grocery store clerk handed me a two-dollar bill the other day with my other change. My immediate thought was that the bill was bogus. After all, you so rarely see one that’s it easy to forget it is legal tender. But it’s got Thomas Jefferson’s face on it. However, if you ever receive a three or four-dollar bill – with the faces of Millard Fillmore and Zachary Taylor on them – be very suspicious.

During the December snowfall, this igloo in the front yard of Deanna Dent’s home in Covington was designed by her son Joseph (second from right) and built with the help of other family members (Benjamin, Clarisse and Ray, from left) and his friend, Tyler Jenson (right). They spent 10 hours building it from 55 100-pound blocks of snow formed by a Rubbermaid container “and lots of snow packed into the cracks and crevices. They had a great time,” Deanna Dent said. Joseph’s older brother, Leland, also helped but “left early to dig his girlfriend’s car out of a snowbank in Snoqualmie,” Deanna said.

For Zandra Jones, volunteering on Christmas Eve is no big deal. It’s like picking up someone’s dropped napkin.
Asia, South America, Chicago and now Covington are among the places where Paul Gossman has answered “the call.”
Now that the Christmas rush is over, many of us will be thinking about our goals and resolutions for the new year.Often those goals are repeats of last year, because we didn’t accomplish whatever it was we had hoped to in the previous 12 months. I always laugh when I can’t find a parking spot or an empty elliptical trainer at the gym in January. When I once complained to one of the gym staff, he said with a smile, “Don’t worry, it’ll empty out again in February.” And he was right.
