Community singers, ages 12 through adult, are invited to join the Maple Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra at the fourth annual community choir concert.

This year’s choral work will be the Mozart’s “Requiem.”

Rehearsals will be 7 t-8:30 p.m. Mondays, Feb. 28 through March 28, fat Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, 23855 SE 216th St., Maple Valley.

A dress rehearsal will be Friday evening April 1 and the final concert will be 7 p.m. Saturday, April 2. Music and practice CD’s will be available at the first rehearsal. A suggested donation of $10 is requested to cover the cost of materials.

The Mozart’s “Requiem,” written in 1791, was left unfinished after Mozart’s death. Over the centuries, a number of composers have attempted to finish the work; the version being performed on this concert was completed by one of Mozart’s pupils, Franz Süssmayr. A somewhat fanciful history of how the Requiem was written was told in the 1984 Oscar-winning film, “Amadeus.”

The Maple Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra, now in its fourth season, has over 70 members and performs numerous concerts in the Maple Valley area throughout the year. The orchestra is directed by April Whyte. Community choir rehearsals will be led by Shepherd of the Valley Music Director Ron Mallory.
