The Covington City Council recognized the efforts of two citizens to the community.

The council recognized Jean Young as the honorary citizen of the year and Kent Fire Department Regional Fire Authority Chief Jim Schneider as the citizen of the year.

Young was recognized as an honorary citizen who lives outside the city limits. She was honored for her volunteer work in the community since 1967.

Mayor Margaret Harto pointed out the number of young people present to support and help recognize Young as a mentor and community example.

“I want to thank the City Council and all of you for this honor,” Young said. “I know so many who are deserving of this. I feel so honored.”

Schneider, a Covington resident, was chosen as citizen of the year for his commitment and years of service to the community.

Schneider pointed to the teamwork between the council members, staff and community that creates a city like Covington.

“Thank you for the recognition,” Schneider said. “This city means a lot to us. What makes Covington is pride. We have pride in our city.”
