Harassment is a widespread, problem | Letter to the editor

Workplace sexual harassment of both women and men is a widespread problem in America, and around the world. It can harm people, families, our economy, and our government institutions.

Workplace sexual harassment of both women and men is a widespread problem in America, and around the world. It can harm people, families, our economy, and our government institutions.

I believe that each and every sexual harassment complaint deserves a full and impartial investigation. Each investigation should be handled professionally and with sensitivity to the rights of both the accuser and the accused.

Some cases involve differences in perspectives between individuals.  It is possible that two well-meaning people can fall into a communication pattern that unintentionally becomes uncomfortable for one or both of the parties. These cases can sometimes be solved by good professional mediation and training.  Sometimes these working relationships can emerge better than ever.

It is important for everyone who is not personally involved in a complaint investigation to give the parties the space and time to try to work out differences productively.  Taking sides prematurely or exploiting a complaint for selfish or political reasons does a disservice to the parties, and to the cause of reducing and eliminating workplace harassment.
