Safety notes
Clean chimneys don’t catch fire. Please have your chimney inspected annually by a certified chimney sweep and cleaned if necessary. Take these additional steps to prevent a chimney fire:
- only burn seasoned firewood,
- burn smaller, hotter fires – they burn more complete and produce less smoke and build-up in the flue
- and don’t burn wrapping paper, cardboard or trash – the flare up can start a chimney fire.
If you do have a chimney fire, evacuate your house and call 911. Have your chimney inspected after a chimney fire; check with your insurance company as this may be covered under your homeowners policy. Additional resources are available from the Chimney Safety Institute of America www.CSIA.org.
