It’s a wet day to be a Conk.

The Kentwood Football team joined the fundraising-fad Friday, posting a video of 110-plus athletes and coaches soaking themselves in the Ice Bucket Challenge for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

The nationwide social media challenge of donating money to support ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, or pouring a bucket of ice water over ones head has gone viral, with millions of video posts, comments and likes on Facebook. ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. The ice bucket movement has reportedly raised more than $5.5 million for the ALS Association through July 29, compared to $32,000 in the same period last year.

Kentwood football coach Rex Norris said the ice and buckets were all donated by area businesses and a company, that he declined to name at this time, will donate to ALS in Kentwood’s name.

Norris said the team discussed the disease and the fight to find a cure.

“We gave the kids the choice (to participate),” he said. “We had some kids that weren’t sure, but we had some that were. We were proud of it.”

Prior to the splashes, the Conks challenged Kentwood alumni and the rest of the Washington state football teams to participate.
