In $50,000 Muckleshoot Tribal Classic

Defending-champion Wasserman will take on four rivals Sunday in the $50,000 Muckleshoot Tribal Classic, going 1-1/16 mile for older horses, after a fourth place finish in the Longacres Mile.

The Tribal Classic is one of seven stakes races worth an aggregate $350,000 for Washington-breds on the 10-race card. The stretch-running son of Cahill Road, who is owned and trained by Howard Belvoir, will attempt to capture his first victory of the season, after finishing behind stablemate and Longacres Mile champ Assessment all seven outs this season. “(Wasserman) is coming up to this race well. The field is going to have run well to outrun him,” Belvoir said. Wasserman is the track’s all-time earner with $471,787.

Atta Boy Roy And Bound To Be M V P Will Battle

In $50,000 Chinook Pass Sprint

A true test of speed is expected between Atta Boy Roy and Bound to Be M V P in the Chinook Pass Sprint for older horses going six furlongs. “(Bound to Be M V P) is an extremely fast horse and he’s going to make us run hard early,” trainer Valorie Lund said. “(Ricky Frazier) will ride (Atta Boy Roy) like he’s stolen.” Atta Boy Roy has already put together a remarkable campaign this season. He tied the track record for fastest six furlongs in a 10-½-length romp in June and finished fifth after running the fastest opening six furlongs—1:07 3/5—in Longacres Mile history last month. Bound to Be M V P returns to Emerald Downs for the first time since his victory in last year’s Chinook Pass Sprint.

Gadget Queen Should Be Favored

In $50,000 Belle Roberts

Gadget Queen will attempt to defend her title going 1 & 1/16 miles in the Belle Roberts for fillies and mares. The daughter of Flying With Eagles has yet to finish worse than third this season, including a victory in the $50,000 Washington’s Legislators Handicap on June 7. Without Elusive Horizon, who has won three straight stakes, she appears to be the one to beat. The Belle Roberts also includes Pretty Maid, who is the only BC-bred horse in a WA/BC Cup race. Clair Annette, who won the $30,000 Hastings Park Handicap on May 17, returns from a three-month layoff and figures to be the leader into the first turn. “Pace makes the race, so we will take (Gadget Queen) back and make one big move to win the race,” trainer Blaine Wright said.

Competitive Group Seeks Stardom

In $50,000 Trooper Seven

Without Noosa Beach, at one mile, the Trooper Seven for Stakes 3-year-old colts and geldings appears to be the most wide-open race on the card. Six out of the eight entries finished in the top three in their previous race including Siberian Cocktail, who beat Roy’s Tops and Big Liberty in an optional-claiming race on July 11. The son of Siberian Summer finished second to Noosa Beach in the 2008 Dennis Dodge Stakes. He’s All Heart, who has improved with each race, will be a top contender for Vic-Tory Stables IV. The Private Gold gelding has a 3-3-0 mark in eight starts this season and has been especially tough at the mile distance. “He has outdone himself,” trainer Larry Wolf said.

No Flies On Doodle Goes For Third Straight

In $50,000 John & Kitty Fletcher Stakes

No Flies On Doodle attempts to continue her success going a mile in the John & Kitty Fletcher stakes for 3-year-old fillies. The Vann Belvoir-trainee has finished first or second in all six of her career races. “It looks like there is a lot of speed,” Belvoir said. “Being on the inside of the speed, it looks like we will have to commit to the first turn.” One speed horse is Ladyledue, who won the first three stakes races this season in the 3-year-old filly division and returns from a two-month break to reclaim the top spot. With two second-place finishes to No Flies On Doodle, Point of Reference looks to make the next step to becoming a stakes winner at Emerald Downs. Swag Stables, owner of No Flies On Doodle, has already set an Emerald Downs single-season record with 26 wins in 2009.

Koala Beach A Top Contender

In $50,000 Dennis Dodge Stakes.

Koala Beach, who has been victim to Hollywood Harbor’s great season, could be tough to beat at 6-½ furlongs in the Dennis Dodge Stakes for 2-year-old colts and geldings. Hollywood Harbor will run in the $75,000 Gottstein Futurity on Sept. 26. “I am happy not to go against Hollywood Harbor,” trainer Doris Harwood said. “(Koala Beach) is solid and he always tries hard.” The son of Harbor the Gold has finished in the money in all three stakes races this season. However, six out of the other seven entries in this race are coming off victories and look fit enough win again. Tough Road, who appears to be working well, is the only first-time starter in the race. Harwood leads trainers with 10 stakes wins in 2009 and has established a single-season earnings mark of $827,304. Formerly the Captain Condo Stakes, this race was renamed in honor of the beloved Daily Racing Form correspondent who died suddenly last year.

Knight Raider Will Be A Short-Price

Knight Raider has been dominant this season and will attempt for her fourth consecutive stakes win going 6-½ furlongs in the $50,000 Diane Kem Stakes. Trained by Doris Harwood, Knight Raider has won her last four races by a combined 33-¼ lengths, which is over 8-¼ lengths per victory, and she could become the first 2-year-old to win five races at Emerald Downs. However, she has yet to face Zenovit, who polished off her foes by four lengths in a $30,000 claimer on Aug. 29. The daughter of Private Gold seems to improve with each and every race and could pull off an upset. “She was pretty green the first time she ran, but she is a real mature filly,” assistant trainer Sharon Ross said. “She is a pro, and I am looking forward to her running this race.”
