The Portland Winterhawks defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 4-2 Saturday night at the Rose Garden in Portland.

Portland (2-2-0-0) took a 1-0 lead at 4:05 of the first period on an unassisted goal by Brad Ross.

The Winterhawks went in front 2-0 at 13:58 of the first on a power-play goal by Ty Rattie. Ross and Sven Bartschi had the assists on the goal.

Portland outshot Seattle 12-3 in the first period.

Seattle (0-2-0-0) got on the board at 13:18 of the second period on Chance Lund’s second goal of the year. Defenseman Dave Sutter poked the puck to Lund just inside the Seattle blue on the left side. Lund broke up the ice and carried the puck into the Portland zone. At the top of the left circle Lund put a slap shot on goal that beat Portland goalie Mac Carruth over the blocker.

Charles Well made it a 3-1 lead for Portland at 15:43 of the second. He was assisted by Ross and Chase De Leo.

The Winterhawks led 30-13 in shots after two periods by outshooting the T-Birds 18-10 in the first period.

Marcel Noebels cut the Portland lead to one goal at 9:25 of the third period with his second goal of the year. Lund took a sharp angle shot from the left goal line that rebounded off Carruth and into the slot. Noebels corralled the loose puck and snapped it over Carruth’s blocker. Mitch Elliot had the second assist on the goal.

Portland iced the game with an unassisted empty-net goal by Derek Pouliot at 18:20 of the third period.

Seattle outshot Portland 15-7 in the third period but the Winterhawks finished with a 38-27 advantage in total shots.

Seattle goalie Calvin Pickard stopped 33 of 36 shots and his record is now 0-2-0-0.

Carruth made 26 saves on 28 and his record improved to 3-2-0-0.

The T-Birds next game is Friday, October 7, against the Prince Albert Raiders at the ShoWare Center at 7:35 p.m.
