Individuals who are interested in writing a pro or con statement to be included in the November voters’ pamphlet for a proposed sales tax increase to fund the newly created Covington Transportation Benefit District should contact the city by July 2 to express their interest.

A two tenths of a percent sales tax increase, which equates to only 1¢ on every $5 of taxable purchases, is being proposed on the November ballot to pay for the city’s unmet transportation needs. The TBD Board has the responsibility to appoint committee members to prepare voters’ pamphlet statements in favor of and in opposition to the ballot measure.

The committees are required to submit statements of no more than 150 words to King County Elections by Aug. 15. King County Elections will then provide each committee with the opposing statement to prepare a rebuttal of no more than 75 words by Aug. 19. These statements will be printed in the voters’ pamphlet to accompany the ballot measure title and explanatory statement.

Each committee may consist of no more than three members. Interested individuals or anyone with questions or comments regarding this process should contact Covington City Clerk Sharon Scott at (253) 480-2400 or sscott@covingtonwa.gov. The TBD Board will appoint the committee members at the July 9 regular board meeting.
