Chick-Fil-A congestion may come to Covington

The city of Bellevue is still reeling after the much-anticipated April opening of Chick-Fil-A, a fast food chain famous for its chicken sandwiches.

Police in Bellevue are still conducting traffic control in the area around the restaurant, more than a month after the doors have opened.

That congestion could be coming to Covington soon.

Richard Hart, Community Development director for Covington, said if the plans for the restaurant move forward, they do expect to do some traffic mitigation in the area.

“We’re going to have to do something to control traffic around the site,” he said in a phone interview. “We’re just not sure exactly what we’re going to do yet.”

The company is in stage one of the process; they have submitted a commercial site development permit application to the city.

After reviewing and accepting the application, a several-month process according to Hart, demolition can start on what used to be Burger King on Kent-Kangley Road.

After that, the company must apply for a building permit to get construction started on the new restaurant.

The public is invited to comment on the potential for the new restaurant by emailing Kelly Thompson, permit center coordinator for the city. Her email is kthompson@covingtonwa.gov. Alternatively, comments can be submitted in writing and mailed or brought to City Hall. Comments are being accepted until June 5.

Representatives from Chick-Fil-A were not immediately available for comment.
