Where were the police? | Letter to the editor

Everyone in the crowd was enjoying this old-time tradition when suddenly the loud noise of an electronic bullhorn shattered the peace.

Citizens lined both sides of Witte Road  Saturday morning, June 14, eagerly waiting for the annual parade. The children were excited as the first cars appeared, carrying smiling, waving guests/dignitaries. Everyone in the crowd was enjoying this old-time tradition when suddenly the loud noise of an electronic bullhorn shattered the peace.

A small group of severely misguided religious zealots carrying a cross and banners assaulted everyone with a harsh admonishment to “repent”. I was shocked by the inappropriateness of this behavior, which was clearly upsetting to all. A short time later, they showed up at Lake Wilderness Park doing the same thing amongst the cars on display. I pray that these poor, misguided souls will come to understand that no one comes to repentance through such tactics. Oh, and by the way, Why didn’t the Maple Valley Police enforce the law against disturbing the peace?
