They ran, they won and now they’re state champions, again.

The Tahoma Girls track team is the 2019 North Puget Sound League (NPSL) 4A State Champions. This is the third year in a row the girls have won state.

The State Championship tournament took place on Saturday, May 25.

Track coach Jeff Brady said the girls won state with 90 points in the bag, which is the most in 4A state history.

“It’s special, so you try not to take those things for granted because it takes a pretty amazing performance for that to happen,” Brady said.

He said the girls excelled in the jumps, hurdles and springs this year, scoring the most points in those events.

Out of 19 events, Brady said Tahoma had six individual champions.

He explained for every first place win, the team gets 10 points. Second place gets eight points and third gets six points. He said first through eighth place get points as well.

Brady said looking back at that weekend, he and the team could already tell they were in a great position to win state.

“So it’s not like a basketball game where at the end of the game, last shot and then you get a big celebration. You kind of see the points pour in as the days goes,” he said. “Kind of going throughout the day, it’s just kind of fun to see the kids preform well. To perform up to the expectation we had going in, or even exceeding.”

He went onto to say “I mean it was awesome. You never forget that moment at the podium when they’re handing you the trophy and you’re surrounded by a team of people that worked all year long.”
